SEGA Gamegear:

This is my Sega Gamegear collection. And that was how my collection began: I mean, I had collected consoles and video games all my life, more or less. But I owned only stuff that was available here in Switzerland. But then one day, when I was surfing the internet, I found a picture and description of a SEGA GAMEGEAR made by COCA COLA! It was red and looked great! I thought: "what is this"??? And I was sure that this was a unique "advertising thing" and that I would never find anything like this to buy.

But I thought why not check at Ebay - and I entered it into their search machine. No results, of course! But then I tried "Sega gamegear special edition" and there was one result with a BLUE Gamegear! I've never seen this before too, made a bid and got it finally! I saved that search and thought that if I got this one, maybe the Coca Cola could appear one day? And guess what happened! One fine day (or better: night), somebody offered not only the Coca Cola gamegear but also a blue one, a light blue, a yellow, a transparent and even a Magic Rayearth special edition as well as a kids gear! They were offered for a ridiculous price to "Buy it Now" in one single auction. You cannot imagine how nervous I was, when I pushed the buttons to buy it! I was afraid that anybody could try to buy it at the same time and could be faster than I was... But it worked and even the shipping costs were extremely low. When I looked at the auction thouroughly after having won it, I saw that the gamegears had been entered just about 15 minutes ago!!!

Anyway, from then on I started my "special limited edition" consoles/handhelds... It was an almost endless searching and sometimes the ones that were still missing were extremely expensive! I still do not have the Coca Cola with its original box, but that is ok. Since I had a good friend in Japan I asked him to look after the white one with the tv and case. That one was the most rare, as I was told. But today I would say that this is not quite true. It might be the most expensive one, but the plain RED one seems to be much rarer. At least, it took me much more time and efforts to get it.

However, I would like to use this opportunity to express my gratitude to the following persons without whom I would never have owned this great collection:

SEGABOB from the USA

André from Japan

and

Frédéric from France

T H A N K YOU for your great assistance!!

Finally some remarks to the Sega Gamegear in general:

It is a phantastic handheld! It has a coloured screen with built in light and the graphic was wonderful for the time it came out and still is.... There was a TV adapter to buy as an addition and it really works... It was expensive at the time it came out compared to the Nintendo gameboy which was with a b/w screen only and without light. That might be the reason why it was not sold very often. (As far as I remember, the Gamegear together with the tv adapter was available for about 500 CHF which equals approx. 360 EUROs)

André in Japan
